Snorkelling and Diving

The Seychelles is made up of 115 of the most beautiful islands in the world. The granite islands of the Seychelles are laying on a submerged plateau just 4 degrees south of the equator, in a sea rich with fishes and coral, the Indian Ocean.

The Marine Life in the Seychelles can be found on the beautiful coral reefs. With a rich variety of corals, an abundance of exotic fishes, such as the always playful Bat Fish, colorful Butterfly Fishes, Parrot Fishes among numerous other tropical fish species. And of course Hawksbill Sea Turtles and even the magnificent Green Sea Turtle can be seen, while having a rest on the reef, or enjoying a meal.

Granite Boulders

The Granite Boulders are the home of many different tropical fishes and of course, Eagle Rays and Giant Sting Rays. But are also attracted by schools of Pelagic fishes, Sharks the occasional Dolphins, and seasonal the gentile giants, Whale Sharks. There are some spectacular swim-through's between the granite boulders, mostly heavily decorated with clams, soft corals, and hard corals. At night revealing a blaze of bright colored soft corals and various other exotic marine creatures, such as Spiny Lobsters, shrimps and crabs.

Wrecks in the Seychelles

There are several well encrusted wrecks, such as the famous wreck of the Ennerdale, an enormous British Fleet Auxiliary tanker of 47,000 tonnes which carried drums of oil to the Seychelles in the seventies and foundered on uncharted rocks, the wreck is now home to Giant Moray Eels, Scorpion Fish, Eagle Rays, Lion Fish, Schools with thousands of fusiliers, jacks, barracudas and a number of Sharks, and Giant Cod. The Dredger Wreck purposely sunk in October 1989 is almost covered in schooling Blue Striped Snappers, home to several species of Scorpion Fish and a number of Moray Eels. Two Barges purposely sunk in February 1989, is host to some very interesting species of marine life, and offers you the opportunity to dive on two wrecks in one dive.

Dive Centers are mainly PADI members and located at beach side hotels and visit a wide range of dive sites. There are also liveaboards which offer diving around the inner islands and the seldom visited southern island groups.

Comprising 115 islands extending across more than 1.3 million square kilometers of pristine Indian Ocean just south of the Equator, of which the combined land area adds up to just over 450 square kilometers, and with a population of just 80.000, the Seychelles has reason enough to celebrate the sea.

The principal inner islands where almost all the population live are spectacular forested granite mountains rising from the Seychelles Bank. The underwater seascape is primarily of huge granite boulders and schools of fish. Further from the inner granitic islands at the very edge of the plateau lie the coral islands of Denis and Bird, and further out again lies the Amirantes island chain and atolls including world heritage site Aldabra.
