Mahé Island Seychelles

No visit to the Seychelles would be complete without a couple of nights on the main island of Mahé...

Mahé Island in the Seychelles is the largest island in the archipelago and base for the International Airport. Mahé Island is just 17 miles by 5 miles with tropical hillsides rising to around 3000 feet.

The spectacular scenery in the north of the island has to be seen to be believed, followed by a leisurely drive around the west coast of the island, taking in some of the picturesque bays. A drive up over Sans Souci, through the Tea Plantations, followed by a descent to the capital, Victoria, is also well worth while. A visit to the Botanical Gardens in Victoria is the only other location apart from the Vallée De Mai on Praslin, where the "Coco De Mer" grows, and here you can also see Giant Tortoises in their enclosure. Then on to the north west coast, to Beau Vallon, arguably the best beach on Mahé. There are of course, numerous other striking beaches such as Grand Anse, Anse Takamaka, and Anse Intendance, to name but a few.

Whilst still on Mahé Island, why not go for a Glass bottom boat trip in the Marine National Park; or a scenic Helicopter trip over the island, with Helicopter Seychelles. Another must is a trip round Mahé Island, either driving yourself with a rental car, or with your own personal driver.

To tempt your palate, no trip to the Seychelles is complete without going to Round Island for Brunch, and sampling the delicious barbecued Tuna steaks, cooked with Doris and Gaby and their sons, Peter and Paul's closely guarded recipe. For authentic Creole cuisine, visit Marie-Antoinette, this established restaurant, owned and run by Madame Fonseka is well worth a visit. Le Rendevous, in the centre of Victoria looking down on the replica of "Big Ben", serves an assortment of Creole and traditional dishes.

Finally, one of the Mahé Island's most popular restaurants is La Scala, run by Sylvana and Gianni, and always serving delicious fresh fish (usually caught personally by Gianni!!).
