Situated at the entrance of the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, Cerf Island measures just 1.5km long (about a mile) by 1km (¾ of a mile); it reaches a height of 108m (354 feet) and lies just 3km east of the main island of Mahe. Cerf Island Resort is the largest hotel on the island and is just a 10 minute boat ride from Mahe.
Cerf was named after the French frégate "Le Cerf" which arrived at Port Victoria on 1 November 1756. Due to Cerf Island's location, in a National Marine Park, the waters around Cerf are a spectacular sight. The deepest point of the Marine Park is 250 metres (820 feet) and the park offers exceptional marine life, with a wide variety of reef fish, crabs, sea urchins, starfish, octopus and many more. Cerf Island is the only island in the marine park to have a small local population who commute to Mahe for their daily business. They live on the opposite side of the island to the resort.
Named in Creole after local trees and fish, Cerf Island Resort has a total of 24 intimate and luxurious villas, 12 of which were built in 2010. All the villas offer beautiful views of the tropical vegetation and patches of the Indian Ocean. Fantastic sunsets are assured from the resort.
A number of activities are available including snorkeling, diving, kayaks, pedal boats, picnics and barbecues, nature trails and sailing. For snorkeling enthusiasts Cerf Island offers exceptional marine life with more than 150 species of reef fish, crabs, sea urchins, starfish and octopus.
