Geography

The Seychelles Archipelago is situated in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar. It comprises 115 granitic and coralline islands, which occupy a total area of 400,000 sq km (150,000 sq miles). The granitic islands form a cluster around Mahé, whilst the coralline islands lie southwest of the granitic group. Both are sanctuary to some of the most rarest and exotic plant and animal life in the world.

Population

The population totals 78,500 with a density of 173 per sq km. The largest island is Mahé where the capital Victoria lies. This island alone has a population of 70,0000.

Religion

The majority of Seychellois are Roman Catholic, but there are Anglican and other protestant churches on Mahé and Praslin.

Language

Creole is the official language but English and French are also spoken.

English-language newspapers include The Seychelles Nation (morning daily) and the Seychelles Weekend Nation, The People (monthly, published by the Seychelles Progressive Front) and Seychelles Review (monthly news review).

Exports

Canned tuna, fresh and frozen fish, copra, cinnamon bark, guano, re-exports.

Imports

Machinery and transport equipment, foodstuffs, mineral fuels (of which much is re-exported), manufactures.
