"...With a colourful array of fish and clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean it is easy to see why so many guests find diving such an exhilarating experience..."

Whilst the islands have a reputation for peace and tranquility there is still a whole range of fun activities to try. On the days when you're not lying on the beautiful white sands soaking up the sun you can spend your time, sailing, fishing, diving and much more.

"Island hopping" is one of the most popular ways to spend your time on the islands and with over 115 islands (link to island tour) comprising the Seychelles it would be a shame to miss any of the exciting features offered on them.

The islands are made up of two different geological formations, granite and coralline. Typically the granite islands have lush green tropical vegetation made up of coconut palms, bananas, mangoes, yams, breadfruit to name but a few. Coralline islands rise only a few feet above sea level but are covered in rich dense vegetation, Aldabra, the largest atoll in the world, contains one-third of all Seychellois land and is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.

So why not take a helicopter ride, charter a boat or simply take an "island hopping" tour with one of the local operators.

The most popular sporting activity on the island is coral reef diving. With a colourful array of fish and clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean it is easy to see why so many guests find diving such an exhilarating experience. Without a doubt you will most certainly see some of the most exotic aquatic wildlife on the planet from the 100 species of coral to the 900 species of fish that are resident in the coastal waters.

Moving onto the surface of the water a wide variety of water sports are available to the enthusiast. Windsurfers, canoes, sailing dinghies and lots more may be hired at the more popular beaches, water skiing and paragliding are available at many other resort areas.

Whilst spear fishing remains illegal in the Seychelles, and has resulted in the coral fish being fearless of divers, game fishing has grown in popularity. Amongst the fish that can be caught are black, blue and striped marlin, sailfish and barracuda. Many of the hotel restaurants will also prepare and cook your catch for your evening meal!

For those looking to take back something to remind them of their trip or who simply feel like shopping local handicrafts include work with textiles (such as batik), fibres (including basket wares, tablemats and hats) and wood (producing traditional furniture, ornaments and model boats). Local spices can be purchased from shops including fragrant vanilla pods, and cinnamon oil, quills and dried bark that can be freshly grated before use. Shops open 0800-1700 Monday to Friday and 0800-1200 on Saturday. Some shops close for lunch between the hours of 1200 and 1300 weekdays.

The nightlife of the Seychelles is simple and in keeping with the atmosphere of the islands. A number of the hotels have nightclubs, bars, and casinos for those seeking a lively night out. For those who would like to try the local cuisine Seychellois Créole cooking is influenced by French, African, Chinese, Indian and English traditions. The use of carefully blended spices, coconut milk and breadfruit are major features. Local specialties include kat-kat banane, chatini requin and chauve-souris to name but a few. Most restaurants outside of the hotels and resorts offer a few items of what is termed ‘international’ cuisine but generally there is a heavy bias towards preparations of fresh fish and shellfish as you might well expect from an island community. Other evening events include performances of the local camtolet music that are often accompanied by dancers, theatre productions are often staged (in Créole, French and English) and there are cinemas in Victoria.
